CONGRATULATIONS BETH!

The INS Annual Convention and Industrial Exhibition is the largest convention in the United States each year, dedicated to the specialty of infusion therapy. It was a six day event comprised of two meetings: the Spring National Academy on Saturday and Sunday, which featured advanced-level education, and the Annual Meeting that ran from Monday through Thursday. The schedule consisted of a keynote/opening session, concurrent general sessions, focus tracks, poster sessions, and evening social events. The Industrial Exhibition was open for three days (Monday-Wednesday), with four hours of dedicated exhibit hours each day.

There are over 15,000 children with autism in the state of Michigan.  That’s a staggering number isn’t it? Today is Global Autism Awareness Day and in an effort to spread the word about Autisum and it’s effects there is a movement in Michigan to Light It Blue. Here are some fast facts about Autism.

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurdevelopmental disorder that appears within the first three years of life.
  • Autism affects a child’s ability to communicate.
  • Autism affects a child’s social interaction with others.
  • 1 out of every 88 children has Autism in America
  • 1 out of every 54 boys will be diagnosed with Autism
  • A child has a greater risk of being diagnosed with autism than childhood cancer, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined
  • Michigan has the 4th largest Autistic population in the U.S.
  • Lifetime health cost of an child with Autism is $3.7 million dollars
  • The rate of Autism in Michigan has increased over 100% since 2001, from 5,680 school children to over 15,000

• 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Injury Prevention, the leading causes of TBI are:
o Falls (35.2%)
o Motor vehicle-traffic crashes (17.3%)
o Struck by/against events (16.5%)
o Assaults (10%)
• Brain injury can result in a range of outcomes (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention):
o 52,000 die
o 275,000 are hospitalized
o 1,365,000 are treated and released from an emergency department.
• According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among children ages 0 to 14 years, TBI results in an estimated
o 2,685 deaths
o 37,000 hospitalizations
o 435,000 emergency department visits
• The number of people with TBI who are not seen in an emergency department or who receive no care is unknown.
• TBI is a contributing factor to a third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the United States.
